Is Spotify worth it for video?
The entry requirement everybody quotes is the thousand listeners. The one that actually decides whether you qualify is measured in hours, and it behaves in a way most creators do not expect.
Spotify pays creators for video podcasts through the Partner Program. One income stream runs on a published 50% ad split, the other on a rate Spotify does not disclose, and the entry bar is measured in hours rather than plays. What that means for a show your size.
The two ways the money reaches you
The Spotify Partner Program pays podcast creators for video, and the money arrives down two separate pipes that behave very differently.
Ads. When Spotify sells an ad against your episode, you take a 50% share of the revenue recognised for it. That half is published, and you can model it.
Premium video. When a Spotify Premium subscriber watches your video episode without ad breaks, you earn from a separate pool. Spotify describes the calculation as a formula based on consumption time, the markets users registered in, and the total eligible video content consumed in those markets. The percentage is not disclosed.
Part of your potential revenue runs on a rate Spotify has not published. The ad share you can estimate. For Premium video, any per-stream figure you have read is a guess.
The bar, and the part that catches people out
From Spotify’s own eligibility page, a show needs all of the following:
- hosted on Spotify for Creators
- a legal address in an eligible market
- at least 3 published episodes
- at least 2,000 consumption hours on Spotify in the last 30 days
- at least 1,000 audience count on Spotify in the last 30 days
Three episodes and a thousand listeners sound reachable. The 2,000 hours is the line that actually decides it, and it is measured in hours of listening rather than in plays. That changes what the bar means for your show, depending on how long your episodes run.
The same bar at three episode lengths
The arithmetic here is ours, derived from Spotify’s published 2,000 hour threshold. It assumes a complete listen, which is the most generous case there is.
A 20 minute episode: about 6,000 plays. A 45 minute episode: about 2,667. A 90 minute episode: about 1,334.
A 90 minute show clears the bar on roughly a fifth of the plays a 20 minute one needs. If somebody has been telling you your episodes run too long, that advice was about retention, and here it works against you.
There is a caveat. Consumption hours count time actually consumed, so a half-finished episode contributes half an episode. If your median listener stops at 40%, multiply every play count above accordingly. In this program, how far through people get is the exchange rate.
There is a floor hiding on the other side of the audience requirement too. Two thousand hours spread across a thousand people works out at two hours per person per month. A weekly show of 30 minute episodes gives each of them about that, and only if every one of them listens to every episode all the way to the end.
Staying in is a second test
Spotify requires that, in any given six month period, a show has published an episode and earned at least $10. A podcast that qualifies on the back of one strong month and then goes quiet can lose its place.
Where it runs, and one thing to set up early
The program is live in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Canada, the United States, Australia and New Zealand. Spotify said it would expand on 20 October 2026 to Spain, Italy, Poland, Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Colombia and a number of Caribbean and Central American markets.
A practical note for anyone who gets there. Once a single month’s earnings reach $1,000, two-step verification becomes mandatory, and you have 30 days to switch it on before payouts are placed on hold. Worth doing on day one rather than during the month you finally get paid properly.
What the success stories are worth
Spotify published a set of creator stories in January 2026. The figure everyone quotes from it comes from Chris Williamson, who described a reliable recurring revenue stream averaging six figures a month. That is his figure, as Spotify reported it. He already ran a very large interview show before this program existed.
Treat that as the ceiling of a very large show. We have not seen Spotify publish a median, and the median is the number that would actually answer your question.
So, is it worth it
If your show is already doing 2,000 hours a month, yes, and without much argument. The ad half is a published 50% split on revenue you are currently not collecting at all, and the video requirement is a camera you almost certainly own.
If your show is below the bar, the useful thing the program does is point at two numbers: how long your episodes are, and how far through them people get. Both of those are yours to change, and both move you toward the threshold faster than chasing raw plays does.
The one thing worth refusing to do is build a revenue plan on the Premium video half. Spotify has not published that rate, so any confident figure circulating for it is an estimate by somebody with less information than Spotify has.
Common questions
How many downloads do I need for the Spotify Partner Program?
Downloads are the wrong unit, which is why this question keeps getting confusing answers. The published thresholds are 1,000 audience count and 2,000 consumption hours on Spotify in the last 30 days, plus 3 published episodes. Hours consumed is the binding one.
Do I have to host my podcast with Spotify?
Yes. The eligibility list states the show must be hosted on Spotify for Creators. The published criteria say nothing about removing the show from other platforms, so check the current terms yourself before assuming either way.
Does a half-listened episode still count toward the 2,000 hours?
It counts for the part that was consumed. The threshold is consumption hours, so a listener who stops halfway contributes half an episode. That is why retention matters more here than it does for a show counted in downloads.
Is the Spotify Partner Program available in my country?
It runs in 19 markets including the UK, Ireland, the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and much of western Europe, and Spotify said it would expand on 20 October 2026 to Spain, Italy, Poland, Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Colombia and several Caribbean and Central American markets.
If this helped, say so. It is how we pick what to write next.
