Am I shadowbanned on YouTube?

29 August 2026 · 7 min read

When getting views suddenly stops working, shadowban is the word that arrives first. It is almost never that. Here is what is actually happening, and how to tell which one is yours in about ten minutes.

Reach falls, nobody tells you why, and the word that fills the silence is shadowban. It is the most common worry in creator communities by a distance, and it is almost always describing something real with the wrong name.

The useful move is to stop asking whether you were punished and start asking which number moved first.

Distribution is downstream of viewer behaviour. Something viewers did changed before anything about your reach changed.

Open youtube studio and check these four, in order

1. Impressions

If impressions are down, you are being offered less. If impressions are flat or up and views are down, you are being offered the same and people are declining. Those are completely different problems and everything else depends on which one you have.

2. Click-through rate

Steady impressions with falling click-through is a packaging problem. The system is still showing your video and the thumbnail and title are not earning the click any more. This is the most common cause and the most fixable.

Check yourself

Line up your last eight thumbnails as a grid, at the size they appear on a phone. If you cannot tell them apart at a glance, neither can the person scrolling.

3. The first thirty seconds

If people click and then leave immediately, the video is not delivering what the packaging promised. A steep cliff in the first half minute is the single clearest signal on the whole page, and it caps everything downstream.

4. Traffic sources

If browse and suggested collapsed but search held, your new videos stopped being recommended to your own audience. If search collapsed and browse held, an older video lost a query it used to own. Same symptom, different disease.

The things that actually restrict a video

None of these are secret, and all of them are visible.

Limited or no ads. Shows as a yellow icon on the video. It affects revenue directly and can affect how aggressively a video is promoted. It is not hidden and it can be appealed.

Age restriction. Removes the video from a large part of the recommendation surface. Visible in youtube studio.

Not recommended for kids or for general audiences. Certain categories are simply less eligible for wide browse traffic. Nothing is being done to you specifically.

Stuck in checking. A processing state, not a penalty. It clears.

What long form and shorts do to each other

A pattern worth knowing: a channel that starts posting youtube shorts heavily often sees its long form views soften. Subscribers arrive from shorts, they are there for shorts, and when a fifteen minute video appears they skip it. The system reads that skipping and offers the long form less.

That is not a ban. It is an audience mismatch you created, and the fix is to decide which one the channel is actually for.

The honest part

Sometimes the answer is that one video did unusually well two months ago and everything since is a return to your real normal. That feels like a punishment and is actually just the average reasserting itself. Before you rebuild the channel, check whether you are comparing today against a genuine baseline or against your single best week.

Common questions

Does YouTube shadowban channels?

There is no hidden setting that quietly hides a channel. There are limited-ads states, age restriction, ineligibility for recommendation on some content, and ordinary variance in how much a video gets offered. Each of those is visible or checkable, which is what separates them from a shadowban.

Why did my views drop with no warning?

Distribution follows viewer behaviour. If reach fell, a viewer-side signal usually fell first: click-through on the thumbnail, how long people stayed in the first thirty seconds, or how much the video was watched to the end. Those are all readable in youtube studio.

Can uploading too often hurt my reach?

Not directly. What hurts is uploading more while quality or consistency drops, because each weaker video teaches the system a little less confidence in offering the next one.
